How to Protect Yourself from Bed Bugs While Traveling?

Here are the steps to follow to maximize your chances of not bringing bed bugs back home.

Before leaving for your trip:

There isn't much to do before leaving. Infestations are not due to poor hygiene or maintenance. Bed bugs are found even in the most luxurious places! Comments online about the presence or absence of bed bugs in the hotel you're going to stay at might not provide relevant information. The details may have been true when posted, but they may not be accurate by the time you arrive. Additionally, the information given is not verified.

1. Upon check-in:

Some experts suggest asking the reception if the hotel has had any issues with bed bug infestations. However, it’s likely the receptionist will claim there have never been bed bugs. If you suspect an infestation, it may be wise to ask. Pay attention to how the person responds.

2. After check-in:

Place your luggage in the bathtub, as bed bugs cannot climb smooth surfaces such as glass, porcelain, smooth plastics, or smooth tile.

3. Inspect the room (for more details, click here):

Use a flashlight to check for signs of bed bugs. Inspect the following:

  • The mattress: check the sheets and seams of the mattress. Bed bugs are usually more likely to be at the head of the bed than at the foot of the bed.
  • The box spring (also check its underside).
  • The headboard: don't forget the back of the headboard, as bed bugs prefer to hide in areas where they won't be disturbed. In a hotel, staff regularly change the sheets. Therefore, the mattress becomes a less favored hiding spot than the headboard.
  • Nightstands: open drawers, etc.
  • Bedside lamps and phones.
  • All surfaces and items near the bed.

4. If you find signs:

Leave the room immediately and take your luggage with you. Tell the reception what you found and ask for another room. Repeat steps 2 and 3.

5. When returning home:

Leave your suitcase outside the house until you have treated it. Heat your luggage and its contents in a ZappBug heater. As an additional precaution, put bed, mattress, and pillow covers on your beds and place bed bug traps at the foot of the bed to ensure you haven't brought any bed bugs home.

Protect your clothes:

To avoid transporting bed bugs in your clothes, use bed bug proof laundry bags.
